This paper draws upon the same set of data as the above paper, with a focus on the ways in which language mediates the social and emotional support that schools provide their students, and some of the emotional experiences that students have around immigration, language, and identity.

We dig into recent Census Bureau American Community Survey Three-Year-Estimates and explore the interaction of the ancestry, place of birth, and “Hispanic origin” variables. Key findings include a 7% increase to the Latino population of NYC, a cross-tabulation of the influence of these variables for different national groups, and the identification of a group of 36,000 individuals who claim both Dominican and Puerto Rican self-identification.
