Bilingualism in Latin America IV

I presented a paper about the different roles languages other than English play in classrooms at a school that is nominally “English as a Second Language”, placing them along formal/informal and teacher/student axes. As was required by the conference, the slides are in Spanish.

I presented these slides with Suzanne Dikker and Heather Homonoff Woodley at the City University of New York Immigration and Education Conference. We focus on bilingualism in education and culturally relevant pedagogy in schools with many Latinos and emergent bilinguals.

NABE 2011

I presented these slides, a synthesis of previous presentations, at the 2011 meeting of the National Association for Bilingual Education in New Orleans. The paper was an overview of the entire project, with an emphasis on classroom-level translanguaging.

I also presented these slides as part of a panel on language and feelings organized by Dr. Miriam Ebsworth. This paper draws upon the same set of data as the above paper, with a focus on the ways in which language mediates the social and emotional support that schools provide their students, and some of the emotional experiences that students have around immigration, language, and identity.

National Association of Ethnic Studies

I presented this paper at the 2010 conference of the National Association of Ethnic Studies.

We dig into recent Census Bureau American Community Survey Three-Year-Estimates and explore the interaction of the ancestry, place of birth, and “Hispanic origin” variables. Key findings include a 7% increase to the Latino population of NYC, a cross-tabulation of the influence of these variables for different national groups, and the identification of a group of 36,000 individuals who claim both Dominican and Puerto Rican self-identification.
